Julia Shining easily handles rivals in her career debut Sunday at Keeneland

Stonestreet Stables’ homebred Julia Shining, a full sister to champion Malathaat, made her career debut a winning one Sunday at Keeneland as she rallied from last for a convincing victory.

Ridden by Luis Saez for trainer Todd Pletcher, the 2-year-old Curlin filly was 11th of 12 runners in the seven-furlong maiden special weight race as Roman Goddess set the opening quarter-mile time of :23.10. She advanced to ninth as Theroanrunner took over and clocked the half mile in :46.88.

Ready to run, Julia Shining bid outside rivals around the turn, swept past the front-runners in early stretch, and opened a two-length lead. From  there, she put the result out of question and reached the finish line 2 3/4 lengths in front of runner-up Positano Sunset.

Time for the contest, the day’s sixth race, was 1:29.43 on a fast track. Julia Shining returned $6.74.

Roman Goddess hung on for third, 3 1/2 lengths behind Positano Sunset.

Like Malathaat, Julia Shining is out of the the A.P. Indy mare Dreaming of Julia.

Shadwell Stables’ Malathaat, also bred by Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet operation and trained by Pletcher, won the Juddmonte Spinster (G1) last weekend at Keeneland. She was last year’s champion 3-year-old filly.
