Two horses named Sierra Nevada ran against one another in a maiden race on Sunday at Gowran Park in Ireland, according to BBC. One Sierra Nevada won the race, while the other finished eighth, marking the first time since 1994 that two horses with the same name have run in the same race.
The winner, trained by Jessica Harrington, was bred and named in the United States. She is a 3-year-old filly by American Pharoah out of the Sadler’s Wells mare Visions of Clarity, a half-sister to Harrington’s first Group 1 winner, Pathfork.
Harrington told racingpost.com: “I knew there were two of them. The other filly kept getting entered and I kept thinking that I hadn’t put that filly in that race! But I’m delighted with her and hopefully now she’ll go forward.”
Meanwhile, the eighth-place finisher was bred in Britain, was sired by Mastercraftsman, and is trained by Charles O’Brien.
BBC reports that racecaller Peter O’Hehir distinguished between the pair by mentioning the trainer during each call.
