The new Rian Johnson directed TV series “Poker Face”—not to be confused with the recent Russell Crowe movie— premiered on January 26. The plot is a murder mystery series with a unique twist and is highly anticipated by fans of the genre. What we don’t know yet is how much poker we are going to see.

Highly Anticipated

Fans of Rian Johnson, known for his work on films such as “Knives Out” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” directed the series, filmed in Hudson Valley locations including New Paltz, Olivebridge and Accord, Filming took place from April through October 2022, using local extras and crew members, according to the Hudson Valley Film Commission.

The 10-episode series follows the story of Natasha Lyonne’s character Charlie, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying—not a bad trait for a poker player to have.

Charlie is on the run after she uncovers a truth that some powerful people want to keep hidden. She hits the road with her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop, encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t resist the opportunity to try and solve. The series promises to be a thrilling and unique experience, with an impressive cast of guest stars including Adrien Brody and Nick Nolte.

The Hudson Valley Film Commission played a crucial role in the production of “Poker Face”, supplying a talented pool of local talent for the show’s background extras and assembling a skilled team of over 50 crew members from the Hudson Valley area to work across various departments such as accounting, grip and electric, hair and makeup, location scouting, production, set medics, special effects, stage management and wardrobe, ensuring the show’s authenticity and a unique local touch.

Rian Johnson also has previous experience in the murder mystery genre, and assembled an incredible line-up of guest stars for Poker Face, much like his previous films “Knives Out” and “Glass Onion.”

With a rotating cast of characters, the series is set to take a similar concept of his Knives Out universe and deliver it with a unique twist. If you’re a fan of murder mysteries, this show is not to be missed. Fingers crossed that we get to see some poker!
