Pennsylvania Online Casinos Win $107 Million From Gamblers In August

Online casino gambling in the Keystone State continues to grow.

According to figures released by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, casino games offered online generated gross revenue of $107,180,341 during August 2022. The revenue was an increase of 20.8% compared to $88,719,021 in August 2021, state regulators said.

The more than $107.1 million came from the following: $75,718,484 from online slots, $28,721,895 from online tables, and $2,739,963 from peer-to-peer online poker. Mount Airy Casino Resort, partner of PokerStars, led the way with $1,690,350 in poker revenue last month.

Unfortunately, overall poker revenue fell more than 14% year-over-year. The state’s online poker tables raked $3,196,992 in August 2021.

Tax revenue generated from online casino gambling during August 2022 was $45,908,338.

In addition to online casinos, Pennsylvania has internet sports betting. August 2022 total sports wagering handle was $363,046,972, a 4.17% increase over the August 2021 total of $348,520,369. The taxable revenue figure for August 2022 was $33,953,300 compared to $18,007,244 in August 2021, an increase of 88.55%.

The handle is the amount wagered at sportsbooks before winning bets are paid out.

More than 90% of the sports gambling monthly handle comes via internet sportsbooks, as opposed to retail shops located in the brick-and-mortar casinos.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board also reported that the combined total revenue generated from all forms of gaming along with fantasy contests during August 2022 was $425,390,202, an increase of 4.24% compared to revenue generated in August 2021.

Sources of gaming revenue regulated by the state include slot machines, table games, internet casinos, sports wagering, fantasy contests and video gaming terminals (VGTs).

August’s gross revenue from slot machines was $201,277,627, a 4.07% decrease in revenue when compared to the $209,820,720 generated in August 2021. The number of slot machines in operation in August 2022 was 25,595 compared to 26,017 at the casinos in August 2021.

Table games at the brick-and-stick casinos generated revenue for August 2022 of $78,453,939, a decrease of 9.11% from August 2021, when revenue was $86,313,388.

Long story short: Online gambling continued to boom in Pennsylvania last month, while retail gambling had a slower than expected month.
