Las Vegas Casinos Flood After Severe Storm

The desert of Las Vegas doesn’t get a lot of rain. In fact, the entire state is currently dealing with a severe drought and the water levels are so low at Lake Mead that three bodies have been so far been recovered.

But the city got an uncharacteristically large monsoon late this week that caused flooding in numerous casinos.

Over on the Las Vegas Strip, Planet Hollywood patrons saw rain coming down from a hole in the ceiling near the pit games.

The entire Fremont Street Experience downtown, a canopy that delivers a nightly music and light show, was knocked out by lightning, as was the exterior power to the Golden Nugget Casino, Binions, and the Pioneer. Across the street at Circa, water poured in from one of their massive TV screens in their sportsbook.

Other casinos in flood zones became very difficult to access or exit due to the rising water levels, and several parking garages became unsafe to navigate.

Both a Flash Flood Warning and a Severe Thunderstorm Warning were issued by the National Weather Service for parts of the Las Vegas valley. Some areas of the city received an inch of rainfall, according to reports. That’s 25 percent of the 4.2 inches of rain the city averages annually.

According to Foxweather.com, “a wind gust of 59 mph was clocked at Harry Reid International Airport just before 10 p.m. local time Thursday, but the Las Vegas Strip reported a 71-mph gust as the storm blew through the city.”

Below is a look at some of the impacts of the storm:
