Standardbred driver/trainer Mark Evers is dead after allegedly shooting a police officer responding to a domestic violence call in Clearcreek Township, Ohio, on Tuesday night.

The police officer, identified as Eric Ney, is hospitalized and in critical but stable condition after being shot in the head. The fallen officer’s partner shot and killed Evers after Ney was hit.

Police were responding to reports of a man ramming an all-terrain vehicle into his wife’s automobile at their residence on Ohio 48 in the rural township located near Lebanon, about 45 miles northeast of Cincinnati. Officers were familiar with the address, having been called there on numerous occasions for domestic disputes, according to reports.

Evers, 65, trained 2021 champion 2-year-old pacer Monte Miki and, according to Harnesslink has 830 career wins as a driver and 452 as a trainer.

Ney, a 14-year veteran of the Clearcreek Township police, was flown via CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital, where he was reported to be responsive and breathing on his own.
