As per a complaint filed, Paul Pierce, a Boston Celtics legend, allegedly owes a poker home game operator the sum of $180,000 and has reportedly failed to pay it back.
According to TMZ Sports, Stephen Carmona alleges he hosted a private game at his home on January 27 and invited the NBA Hall of Famer, an enthusiastic yet casual poker player. He purportedly loaned Pierce $150,000 for him to participate in the high-stakes game on the condition that he repays it within seven days.
The lawsuit states the former basketball player only refunded $10,000 of that amount and afterwards borrowed an additional $40,000 from Carmona to compete in a new game but has apparently not refunded anything either. Throughout his 17-year NBA career, Pierce made roughly $200 million in salary and endorsement pacts.
Mixed reactions
The case has sparked a heated debate on social media. Several Pierce fans are perplexed as to why a player who earned $198 million over his 19 seasons in the NBA must borrow money. Many are skeptical of Stephen Carmona’s allegations. Pierce has not commented until this point regarding the accusations.
It is also vital to point out that the former NBA star had a staggering net worth of $70 million in 2021. Some believe that the former basketball star is probably broke.
They point out that he has been caught on camera in the past engaging in activities such as gambling, smoking cigars, and partying in strip clubs. Pierce has also competed in the World Series of Poker, indicating that he is an ardent poker player.
In 2019, he also played on PokerGO’s Poker After Dark with Phil Hellmuth, Jennifer Tilly, Alan Keating, and the late Mike Sexton. The basketball player dubbed “The Truth” was all in preflop with J♠J♣ versus Keating’s K♣J♦ the play featured below. They decided to rerun the hand with $40,500 in the pot, and the better hand won both times.
Multiple lawsuits
Pierce has gotten himself into trouble before. He has been sued several times in the recent past.
A lawsuit was filed against Pierce in 2018 because he was accused of calling a guard “racist” after a bout between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov. He was sued in 2020 for refusing to pay the person in charge of constructing and operating his marijuana grow house, and he was hauled to court in May of this year for an apparent cryptocurrency “pump and dump” scam.
